Kamp Kiwanis Bus Program

Kamp Kiwanis provides busing through Birnie Bus Tours, Inc. We pick up kampers from several places in the state, while some kampers are driven in to Kamp. Pick-up and drop-off times vary each week; parents/guardians and Kiwanians are contacted by noon on the Friday before for pick-up and drop-off times. Kampers driven in to Kamp can be dropped off between 3 p.m and 4 p.m. on a Sunday, incoming day, and will need to be picked up between 8 and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, outgoing day.

• Participants are to be supervised by their guardians or the responsible party while staff members load or unload them onto or off of the bus. Parents/Guardians and Kiwanians are not allowed on the bus for any reason.
• Participants must stand clear of the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the staff member states that they are ready to load or unload one participant at a time.
• All participants will be provided with a safety orientation while on the bus.
• Handling participant behavior - if the behavior is jeopardizing health and safety of other participants the bus will stop in a safe area, the police will be called and the parent/guardian must come and get the participant.
• If a parent/guardian is not available for pick-up or drop-off a person listed on the Authorization to Admit and Release form may substitute. For security reasons, everyone must show photo ID when picking up or dropping off. If a child is not picked up at Kamp or the bus stop and all emergency contacts have been exhausted, the Kamp will contact authorities to come pick up your kamper to ensure their safety. Not picking up your kamper is considered abandonment.
• If for any reason a child does not show up to the bus stop or to Kamp for drop off, staff at Kamp will contact all emergency numbers to establish a kamper's attendance. These are children who are scheduled to attend and are listed on the incoming day arrival list.
• If for any reason the bus is longer than 30 to 45 minutes late, staff at Kamp will contact the parents/guardians for the new established arrival time.

• No one leaves the bus without proper supervision.
• All staff and participants will remain seated during the trip unless they need to use the rest room.
• Blocking of the doorways is prohibited.
• No horseplay will be allowed at any time. Movies will be played to pass the time!
• All buses have the capacity of 39-59 passengers and will not be overloaded for any reason. A minimum of three staff will be assigned to each bus trip. One of these staff will be an American Red Cross certified lifeguard with training in first aid and CPR for the professional rescuer. He/she is equipped with a first aid kit that includes basic first aid supplies and a resuscitation mask. All staff are trained in bus safety and bus management. There is also emergency equipment located on the bus.
• There are no seat belts on a motor coach bus. If seat belts are available all passengers will be buckled.
• Persons using wheelchairs must be able to get onto the bus with a staff person's assistance. A staff person will be seated next to them the entire trip. Wheelchairs must be able to folded and placed under the bus. If it does not, please contact Kamp to ensure busing is still available. Persons utilizing utilizing wheelchairs while on the bus will have their chair seat belt locked. They also will have their wheelchair in a locked position and secured to the vehicle at all times.
• Counselors will call out one participant name at a time; please wait until you hear your name before boarding the bus.
• All medications must be in original containers with dosage instructions provided, out and ready to be collected and ready to give to kamp staff. Also, please have medications needing to be administered during the trip stored in a plastic zip-lock bag or envelope labelled with the kamper's name and the time it is to be taken. Note: the trip may take up to 6-8 hours.
• Participants must bring a bag lunch, drink and snacks on the bus. Please label lunches with the participant's name.
• If your kamper is riding the bus week two(2) or six(6) please do not pack any items that contain nut products or may contain traces of nuts as these are the weeks we are accepting children with nut allergies. Staff will go over safety procedures and emergency plans including evacuation procedures when all are on board.

• Two leadership staff are on call at kamp for busing for each weekend and have lists of all children including emergency contacts.
• Each bus is equipped with a cell phone for direct communication with kamp.
• Staff will notify parents/guardians as soon as possible if any changes occur.
• Notifications include: delays of more than 20 to 30 minutes; the illness of a child, behavioral problems, or the need to call 911.
• In case of emergency, staff will contact parents/guardians as soon as possible.
